We are looking for an ML manager to build and run a team that keeps models alive in production. The job is hiring, growing engineers, and owning delivery and on-call health — with enough technical depth to challenge an ML system design and recognise an optimistic plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a team of ML engineers: one-to-ones, growth, performance, and career progression.
- Hire for the team — define the profile, design the loop, calibrate, and close candidates.
- Own team delivery: commitments, capacity, escalation, and the trade-offs behind what is dropped.
- Set how work flows through the team: intake, prioritization, review, and the on-call rotation.
- Build the operating discipline that keeps production models healthy — named owners, alerting, and follow-through.
- Partner with data science, engineering, and product leadership on roadmap and staffing.
- Address performance issues early and recognise strong work specifically rather than generally.
- Represent the real cost and constraints of running ML in production to leadership.
Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years in ML or software engineering, including direct people management.
- Enough depth to review an ML system design and challenge a plan credibly.
- Hiring experience for ML or engineering roles, including calibration.
- Delivery management with shifting priorities and on-call responsibilities.
- Experience with performance and growth conversations.
- Understanding of what drives training and inference cost.
- Clear communication with engineers and executives alike.
Nice to Have
- A prior senior individual contributor background in ML engineering.
- Having built an on-call and reliability practice for model-backed systems.
- Managing a distributed team across time zones.
- Cloud and vendor cost negotiation experience.
