We are looking for a BI analyst to own the semantic model for a business area — the measures, hierarchies and grains that every report in that area is built on. This is reporting infrastructure work: when a number is wrong in three dashboards, you fix the model rather than patching the dashboards.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the semantic model for a business area: measures, hierarchies, grains, and naming.
- Design governed reporting products that other people build their own analysis on top of.
- Model reporting data with dbt so the logic behind a number lives in one place, not in each report.
- Optimize refresh and query performance through incremental refresh, aggregation, and partitioning.
- Implement row-level security and the access model that goes with it.
- Run requirements sessions, write the specification, and decline requests already answered by an existing model.
- Consolidate and retire redundant reports rather than adding to the pile.
- Support the analysts consuming your model, and fix the model when the same question keeps coming back.
Skills & Qualifications
- 2-5 years in business intelligence or analytics engineering.
- Strong SQL and solid dimensional modelling — star schemas, slowly changing dimensions, conformed dimensions.
- Depth in one BI platform's semantic layer: DAX, LookML, or an equivalent measure language.
- dbt or another transformation framework kept in version control.
- Practical performance tuning of reporting queries and refreshes.
- Experience designing row-level security and access models.
- Requirements gathering and the discipline to write the spec before building.
Nice to Have
- Administration of a BI platform: capacity, gateways, deployment pipelines.
- Near-real-time reporting fed by Kafka or change data capture.
- Data quality testing with dbt tests or a comparable framework.
- Awareness of cloud warehouse cost and how report design drives it.
