Lead Natural Language Processing Engineer

Remote Full-time 7-10 years Bachelor's Degree
Apply for this Position

Position Overview

We are looking for a lead NLP engineer to own a language workstream and the engineers in it. You will set the quality bar for what is allowed to face users, own the data strategy behind it, and revisit the build-versus-fine-tune-versus-buy decision as the model landscape keeps moving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead an NLP workstream: scope, sequencing, staffing, and delivery commitments.
  • Own the quality bar for language systems in production and the evidence required before something ships.
  • Coach the engineers on your workstream, and review their evaluation design as closely as their code.
  • Decide the build, fine-tune, or buy split, and revisit it as the model landscape changes.
  • Stay hands-on for the hardest language problems.
  • Own the text data strategy: sourcing, annotation budget, licensing, and retention.
  • Agree contracts and priorities with product, ML engineering, and data engineering leads.
  • Report honest quality numbers to leadership, including where the system reliably fails.

Skills & Qualifications

  • 7-10 years in NLP, including leading engineers.
  • Expert-level NLP across extraction, classification, retrieval, and generation.
  • Judgment about model choice under real cost, latency, and quality constraints.
  • Ability to plan and sequence work whose research outcome is uncertain.
  • Coaching and review practice with engineers at different levels.
  • Experience operating language services in production, including incident response.
  • Clear stakeholder communication about what a language system can and cannot promise.

Nice to Have

  • Building and running an annotation operation.
  • Turkish-language product experience at scale.
  • Multi-client delivery in a consulting setting.
  • Handling text under regulatory constraints: personal data, retention, and auditability.

What You'll Gain

  • Competitive salary.
  • Fully remote — work from wherever you're most productive.
  • Annual learning budget for books, courses, and conferences.
  • Top-tier hardware and software tooling.
  • Private health insurance and flexible time off.
