Lead Machine Learning Engineer

Remote Full-time 7-10 years Bachelor's Degree
Apply for this Position

Position Overview

We are looking for a lead ML engineer to own a workstream and the engineers in it. You will decide what gets built as shared platform and what stays per-model, hold the gate on what reaches production, and remain the person who can fix the system when it breaks at the worst time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead an ML engineering workstream: roadmap, sequencing, staffing, and delivery commitments.
  • Own the production outcome for your models — reliability, latency, cost, and retraining cadence.
  • Coach the engineers on your workstream and run their design and code review practice.
  • Decide what becomes shared platform and what stays specific to one model, and defend the split.
  • Stay hands-on for the hardest systems and the incidents that need your depth.
  • Own the promotion gate: what evidence a model must produce before it is allowed to serve traffic.
  • Agree priorities and interfaces with data science, data engineering, and product leads.
  • Report progress, risk, and cost to leadership, and stop work that is not paying for itself.

Skills & Qualifications

  • 7-10 years in machine learning engineering, including leading engineers.
  • Expert ML systems design across training, serving, features, and monitoring.
  • Operational depth with Kubernetes and Terraform on at least one major cloud.
  • Ability to plan and sequence across several engineers and hard dependencies.
  • Coaching experience and comfort with direct feedback.
  • Reliability practice specific to ML: service objectives, rollback, and postmortems.
  • The ability to make a cost-versus-quality trade-off and explain it to people who fund it.

Nice to Have

  • Building an internal ML platform used by more than one team.
  • GPU capacity planning and cost management.
  • Multi-client delivery in a consulting setting.
  • ML in regulated domains where audit trails and explainability are required.

What You'll Gain

  • Competitive salary.
  • Fully remote — work from wherever you're most productive.
  • Annual learning budget for books, courses, and conferences.
  • Top-tier hardware and software tooling.
  • Private health insurance and flexible time off.
