Lead Data Engineer

We are looking for a lead data engineer to own a platform workstream and the engineers in it. You are accountable for whether the data arrives on time, what it costs to keep it arriving, and whether the people building it are getting better at their craft.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a data engineering workstream: roadmap, sequencing, staffing, and delivery commitments.
- Own the outcome for your area of the platform — freshness, reliability, cost, and how incidents are handled.
- Coach the engineers on your workstream and run the design and code review practice they work within.
- Decide the split between platform investment and delivery work, and defend that split with evidence.
- Stay hands-on for the hardest designs and the incidents that need someone senior in the room.
- Set technical direction for your workstream inside the architecture standards, and escalate where they do not fit.
- Agree contracts and priorities with analytics, BI, and ML leads who depend on your data.
- Report progress, risk, and trade-offs to leadership without softening the parts that are behind.
Skills & Qualifications
- 7-10 years in data engineering, including leading engineers.
- Expert pipeline and warehouse architecture, proven by a platform you have actually run.
- Depth across Kafka, Airflow, dbt, and at least one cloud data warehouse.
- Operational maturity with Kubernetes and Terraform, including what happens at 3am.
- Ability to plan and sequence work across several engineers and hard dependencies.
- Real experience coaching engineers and handling difficult feedback conversations.
- Reliability practice: service objectives, alerting that matters, and postmortems that change something.

- Meaningful cost reduction on a large data platform.
- Leading a migration from legacy ETL tooling to a modern stack.
- Multi-client delivery in a consulting setting.
- Streaming-first architecture with Flink or Kafka Streams.
