We are looking for a lead AI engineer to own an AI workstream and the engineers in it. You will hold the release gate for features that face users, own the cost and latency budgets, and keep revisiting the build-versus-host-versus-buy decision as the landscape shifts under everyone.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead an AI engineering workstream: scope, sequencing, staffing, and delivery commitments.
- Own the release gate for AI features — the evidence required before anything faces a user.
- Coach the engineers on your workstream and run the design and evaluation review practice.
- Decide the build, host, or buy split for models and tooling, and revisit it as the landscape moves.
- Stay hands-on for the hardest designs and the production failures nobody else can unpick.
- Own the cost and latency budgets for your workstream and defend them when a feature wants more.
- Agree contracts and priorities with product, NLP, ML, and platform leads.
- Communicate capability and limitations honestly to leadership and clients, including where a model should not be used.
Skills & Qualifications
- 7-10 years in software engineering, including leading engineers on AI-backed products.
- Expert design of retrieval, agent, and evaluation systems.
- Judgment about model selection under cost, latency, privacy, and quality constraints.
- Ability to plan and sequence under fast-moving technical change.
- Coaching experience and a functioning review practice.
- Production operation of AI services, including incident response.
- Clear communication about risk, including saying no to an application of a model.

- Standing up an internal AI platform used by several teams.
- Self-hosted model serving and GPU capacity planning.
- Multi-client delivery in a consulting setting.
- Working within regulated constraints such as data residency and auditability.
